Auto enrolment is a requirement for all employers to automatically enrol their eligible employees into a pension scheme. The pension schemes used must meet new standards, including employer contributions for qualifying employees.

Employers will need to undertake new processes each pay period, including assessment of the workforce, auto enrolling those eligible, facilitating opt-ins and opt-outs, mandatory communications and record keeping.

The new duties are therefore wide-ranging and, as well as pensions, will impact on finance, HR and payroll.

Even if your business already has a pension scheme in place, it must meet the new criteria set out by the government.

Employers began auto enrolment gradually over a 4 year period starting with the largest firms first from 1st October 2012 to 1st October 2016.

Each firms staging date is based on HMRC information on the 1st of April 2012 Even if information has changed since, staging dates will not.
